An ongoing series of classes presented by Trinity Cathedral’s Iconography Institute taught by Fr. Jon Buffington

Trinity’s Iconography Institute announces another in the ongoing cycle of iconography classes. This class will be an introduction to basic iconography for beginners wishing to learn the fundamental principles and techniques of design and creation of an icon; class sessions will provide students with the techniques necessary to execute an icon using egg tempera medium on a wood panel, from prototypes provided by the Instructor. Liturgical use and spiritual dimensions of icons will also be explored and practiced during the class, which will be conducted in the form of a prayerful, spiritual journey. Students should expect to complete a personal icon in this class.

Fr. Buffington has an extensive art background in various media; he has studied iconography with many noteworthy Master Iconographers in several countries, including the renowned Fr. Egon Sendler S.J. the noted French iconographer and author of an authoritative iconography instruction book.

Fr. Jon has executed a number of iconography commissions for churches and Institutions in Portland and the greater Pacific Northwest; one of his icons is in the personal collection of the Patriarch of Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey).

Classes are limited to 10 students, consisting of approximately 30 hours instruction and demonstration spread over 12 weeks.

Fees for the class are $250.00 for tuition plus $50 for administrative costs. The Instructor will provide a prepared wood panel and the prototype icon for each student to use. A supplies list will be provided at the first class; if you have not already purchased one for a prior class, students will need to buy a boxed kit of 22 @ ½ ounce jars of high-quality dry pigments from the Institute – necessary to complete their icon. The boxed pigment kit costs $40.

Demand for registration has historically been high, so early registration is recommended; class assignments will be made on a first-come-first-served basis.
